Girls Play Rugby!

Girls Play Rugby!

Rugby is a great team sport and Thornbury Rugby FC is proud to be able to offer girls aged 10 to 18yrs old the opportunity to experience this first hand. The season runs from the first Sunday in September until the end of April. The girls can start with mixed girl/boy teams from Reception (U6’s) up to Y6 (U11’s). From Y7, they will join the Girls’ Youth Team. Anyone new to rugby can start at Y6 with the Girls’ Youth Team.

Rugby provides many great opportunities to meet like minded sports orientated individuals. Training is held at Thornbury RFC, Rockhampton on Sunday mornings from 10.30 to 12md, with scheduled games through the training season with other local teams. There is a Rugby Code that all English Teams follow from starters up to senior players and that is:

TEAMWORK – RESPECT – ENJOYMENT – DISCIPLINE – SPORTMANSHIP

There is a mixed level of girls, some like sports and are keen to develop through the U13’s, U15’s, U18’s and then into the ladies team. Some just simply like the camaraderie of a team sport and the fun of simply getting muddy on a Sunday morning. Thornbury RFC Girls Youth Rugby is open to all. We are running U11’s and U13’s at the moment. For those aged 13 and 14 years who have never played rugby before feel free to come along and see what rugby is all about.

Rugby gives girls / women confidence. You can forget all of your problems. You laugh, smile, get hurt, get back up, you lose, you cry, you WIN! Rugby is always going to be a constant battle on the pitch, but off the pitch it should never be when it comes too body image. Every girl/ woman should be able to express the way they look and feel comfortable enough to wear a tight playing shirt, baggy playing shirt, shorts too tight, shorts too big! Who really cares as long as you’re comfortable.

You can still be feminine as well as being strong and powerful

Also, we are extremely lucky to have two experienced rugby coaches. Laura Panting is a primary school teacher and has been the TRFC Senior Ladies Captain for many years, so has great experience when dealing with youth training on and off the pitch. She is supported by Annie Parker. Annie is a nurse and has been coaching for numerous years at TRFC, helping develop the girls’ rugby within the club. Both have great passion for the game and it shows in their ability to help girls of all abilities to have the personal strength and courage to take on the game of rugby. As coaches they also want each child to be the best that they can be.
